a. What is marijuana?
Cannabis is a very diverse category as part of the plant kingdom that can be split into thousands of species. Within the plant family Cannabaceae is the genus Cannabis as shown below. It is true that hemp and marijuana are part of the same family and genus. Hemp can only be made from Cannabis Sativa.
The main difference between the two plants is that hemp legally must contain less than 0.3% of the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC compared to marijuana. THC is another cannabinoid with therapeutic benefits but is best known for its intoxicating effects or “high”. Marijuana products typically focus on THC levels greater than 0.3% of the product and may not always focus on the functional benefits. Hemp products like what Green Compass creates, focuses more on CBD and lower, functional amounts of THC that are extracted from hemp plants.
b. What is hemp?
- Hemp is one of the oldest cultivated crops on the planet. Industrial hemp is grown worldwide to manufacture a wide range of products, from textiles to cosmetics, to building materials. Some of the most recent research has shown the promising benefits of consuming Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, a cannabinoid which is in high concentrations within the hemp plant.
- CBD's anti-inflammatory properties have been reported to aid in things like sleep and mood regulation.
- Hemp contains over 140 different cannabinoids, as well as terpenes, flavonoids, fatty acids, vitamins A,C,E,K (in small quantities) and various minerals.
- At Green Compass, we focus on CBD, which we extract from the hemp plant and use to formulate a variety of products with amazing health and wellness benefits.
- According to the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is legally required to contain no more than 0.3% THC. Compliance with this law assures that legally grown hemp products do not contain enough THC to have intoxicating properties that can cause a “high”. Though some states vary, the 2018 Farm Bill reclassified Hemp, making it legal to grow in the United States.

c. What are cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids, are biologically active, lipophilic (“fat loving”) compounds that exist within the hemp plant.
Endocannabinoids are naturally occurring and interact with the body's own system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system regulates many functions such as sleep, pain , inflammation, mood, immune responses, and much more.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a major cannabinoid within hemp.
CBD has been shown to be non-addictive and safe. CBD and other cannabinoids continue to be studied for their potential benefits. Other common cannabinoids include CBG (Cannabigerol), CBN(Cannabinol), THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), and over 140 more.
There are 3 main types of cannabinoids:
d. ECS Intro
The endocannabinoid system (or ECS) is a newly discovered transmitter system of the human body. Basically, it is responsible for how cannabinoids like CBD offer their benefits to the body. The system itself controls some critical functions related to memory, pain, sleep and mood.
- NIH
Simplifying the ECS and how it works.
There are a series of receptors within the body that make up the ECS. At a molecular level, endocannabinoid molecules which turn on the receptors of the ECS, and hemp plant molecules are similar in structure.
The most commonly researched receptors and most abundant in the body are cannabinoid receptors 1 and 2, otherwise known as CB1 and CB2. CB1 and CB2 can be found within every system within the body. It is important to note that there are many other receptors that cannabinoids interact with not mentioned here. The focus in this introduction to the ECS is on CB1 and CB2.
The CB1 receptors are concentrated in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).
The CB2 receptors are mainly found in the immune system and organs.

e. Intro to farming conditions
The plant. Hemp is one of the oldest cultivated crops on the planet. For centuries, it was used as XYZ. Currently, industrial hemp is grown worldwide to manufacture a wide range of products, from textiles and building materials to cosmetics and medicines.
Hemp actually helps clean our planet through phytoaccumulation. This simply means the plant absorbs, not only all of the nutrients from the soil and water, but also contaminants. If toxins and metals are present in the ground they will end up in the plant. That's why it's important to make sure that the soil is USDA Organic, not just that your hemp was grown with organic practices. At Green Compass, we rigorously monitor our soil and water sources to ensure our hemp plants remain as clean as possible.
Farming Practices.
North Carolina’s favorable climate and soil conditions are ideal for growing hemp. The climate, combined with the range of soils available, allows hemp to thrive here. We farm with non-GMO seeds, USDA-certified organic soil and rotate crops annually to rest the soil, as part of USDA Organic Standards and just plain good farming practices.
Hemp Academy - 201
a. Cannabinoids and potential health benefits
As of today we have identified over 140 different Cannabinoid compounds. Cannabinoids are plant compounds found in hemp that have many potential benefits when consumed.
Research suggests that topically applied CBD and other cannabinoids may also have anti-inflammatory properties and help with skin irritation.
CBD is one major cannabinoid in the hemp plant that has potential health benefits, but there are many others, such as CBDa, CBG, CBGa, CBN, CBC.... These minor cannabinoids continue to be studied for their own benefits.
b. CBD and minor cannabinoids
As research continues some of the minor cannabinoids have shown promise in targeting certain health benefits.
CBG, CBC, CBN, CBG, CBDA and others may help to:
- relieve pain and inflammation
- promote better sleep
- improve mood
Doses and delivery methods for these minor cannabinoids continue to be studied.
Titrating to effect or ‘low and slow dosing strategies” are suggested as everyone’s ECS needs different levels of “tuning”. When consuming cannabinoids, effects vary widely because correct dosing, as well as the intensity, duration and frequency can also vary for products and their suggested use.
c. The Process/Extraction
As of today we have identified over 140 different Cannabinoid compounds. Cannabinoids are plant compounds found in hemp that have many potential benefits when consumed.
Our hemp plants are hand harvested and handled with care. Harvest is followed up by our meticulous drying process, which monitors temperature, humidity, and overall air quality for cannabinoid and terpene retention. Throughout the process, we test and monitor to ensure the quality of the CBD that goes into our great products.
Organic Compliant Extraction & Purification – we extract oils from the hemp using only small batch organic compliant extraction methods. Likewise, post-processing only uses organic compliant methods to obtain the highest quality extracts possible for peace of mind when you consume or recommend our products to your loved ones.
d. Full-Spectrum vs Broad Spectrum
Classifications used in the hemp industry, notably Full Spectrum vs. Broad Spectrum, can be confusing. Generally speaking, these terms are meant to define the array or spectrum of naturally occurring compounds found in the oil that is extracted from the plant.
Full Spectrum Hemp Extract contains CBD and any of the over 140 cannabinoids and other beneficial compounds naturally found in the hemp plant including terpenes and flavonoids. Some THC is also present.
Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract is the same full spectrum extract, except the THC has been removed. It retains other cannabinoids, as well as terpenes and flavonoids, that have a synergistic health and wellness effects.
CBD Isolate contains only CBD.

e. Certified Organic Extraction Process
Green Compass favors a small-batch extraction method that produces rich, superior crude oil, which is then refined through a proprietary seven-step process.
As part of our USDA Organic Certification, we use only organic compliant extraction methods in our process.
Non-organic extraction methods include butane, propane, denatured or non-organic ethanol, among other harmful solvents: If using non-organic extraction methods, you run the risk of having toxins, heavy metals, and other unwanted impurities in the extract. These sources are also often derived from petroleum or other unwanted and unregulated sources.
f. Traceability/Transparency
Traceability
refers to where materials/inputs/ingredients originate within our supply chain (lot number traceability). EX: We can trace a full spectrum tincture back to the specific lot of hemp from which it was formulated.
Transparency
is openly sharing relevant information about business practices, ingredients, and final product with consumers, Advocates, and the public.
